All about oil
Why change oil at all?
Because it gets dirty. Soot and dust get past the pistons and valves into the oil. On top of that come metal wear particles and residues caused by heat.
So the oil never has to come out again?
The usual oil change is no longer needed. But there are exceptions: if the oil gets too thick or too thin, overheats, or something gets in that doesn’t belong there, it must come out. The cause should then be found too.
Does oil lose its lubricating power over time?
Without a filter, yes. With the TRABOLD filter it even lubricates better than fresh oil, according to the manufacturer. The field test shows the comparison.
Why does the oil stay black?
According to the manufacturer, the black is mainly ultra-fine carbon, and that lubricates well. The filter holds back the coarse particles that cause wear. It lets the very finest through. So with engine oil you can’t see that it is clean. You can only measure it in the lab.
Does the oil get thicker?
It can. It usually gets a little thicker and then stays stable, at SAE 30 or SAE 40. According to the manufacturer, the engine does not use more fuel or oil because of this.
In detail
Does it filter the additives out of the oil?
No, says the manufacturer: the additives are too small for that. In 1993 TÜV also found no significant chemical change in the oil.
How can paper get water out of oil?
The insert is made almost entirely of cellulose, in other words paper. It soaks up water even when it is full of oil. The small 10er insert takes up 60 to 100 g of water this way.
Which oil should I use?
The one named in your vehicle’s operating manual.
Filter and insert
How often do I need a new insert?
On an engine, about every 10,000 to 50,000 km. It depends on the engine and the filter size. In 2000 Main-Post named 15,000 to 20,000 km for cars and around 40,000 km for trucks.
Can I change the insert myself? Where does it go afterwards?
Yes, it takes 5 to 10 minutes. The old insert does not belong in household waste. Hand it in where you bought it, or at a waste oil collection point or a recycling centre.
Does the normal oil filter stay in?
Yes. The TRABOLD filter runs in addition. According to the manufacturer, the normal filter only needs replacing every 100,000 km.
Does it work on automatic gearboxes too?
Yes, the housing can be connected there too. Hydraulic, switch and insulating oils can also be cleaned in mobile filter units.
Can the filter move to my next vehicle?
Yes. It is not a throwaway part. You can remove it and keep using it in your next vehicle.
Does the oil pressure drop?
According to the manufacturer, tests showed no pressure drop in the engine, because the oil pump has enough reserve.
Fitting, warranty and liability
Do I need approval or a TÜV check?
According to the manufacturer, no. Fitting it is not an engine modification that needs approval, so you don’t have to go to the TÜV. Any workshop can fit the filter. You can also fit it yourself. Instructions are included.
What about my vehicle’s warranty?
The manufacturer writes: the vehicle maker may not cancel the warranty across the board because the filter was fitted. It may do so for damage the filter itself causes. And of course it does not have to give any warranty on the retrofitted filter.
What warranty is there on the filter?
Three years on the housing, under the manufacturer’s terms. Whoever fits the filter is liable for fitting it properly.
What happens if the filter causes engine damage?
Then contact Trabold Filter GmbH. It names insurance of up to 2.5 million euros per claim and up to 1.5 million euros per person.
How long does fitting take?
Around 1 to 2 hours in a workshop. More under Fitting.
Oil heating
What does the filter do for oil heating?
According to the manufacturer, many burners fail only because of dirty heating oil. With clean oil, the finest nozzle fits. That means better combustion, less heating oil and less wear on the pump. Savings of up to 5 % are named, together with a tank clean.
One operator wrote in 1999 that his maintenance service had said: “The system has never been this good.”
Buying and costs
Where can I get the filter?
Trabold is the manufacturer. We distribute its filters with its permission. There is no shop here. Write to us and we will help you choose. You then order from Trabold Filter GmbH.
What does it cost?
10er 398 €, 20er 658 €, 30er 748 €, each incl. 19 % VAT, plus shipping. A new insert costs 15.35 € to 39.15 €, sold in packs of two or four. The cost comparison shows what that means over the years.
